The University of Ilorin and the Nigerian Conservation Foundation have formalised a strategic collaboration aimed at strengthening environmental sustainability, research, and conservation education through a newly signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

The agreement, signed on Monday, April 13, 2026, at the university’s campus in Ilorin, Kwara State, marks a significant step toward integrating practical conservation initiatives into academic and community frameworks.

Central to the partnership is the establishment of a five-hectare Conservation Park within the university, which is expected to serve as a hub for biodiversity preservation, environmental research, and experiential learning.

The collaboration will also focus on promoting youth engagement in conservation, enrolling students of the institution as members of the foundation, and undertaking joint research projects, including carbon assessment of forest resources within the university.

Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, described the initiative as a reflection of the institution’s commitment to sustainable development and environmental stewardship.

“The partnership reflects our commitment to promoting environmental sustainability and conservation in our university. We commend NCF, a critical stakeholder, for this unique partnership that enhances our efforts on environmental conservation and sustainable development. We look forward to working with NCF to create a positive impact on our campus and beyond,” he said.

On his part, Director-General of the Nigerian Conservation Foundation, Joseph Onoja, lauded the university’s proactive approach, noting that the collaboration would strengthen conservation advocacy and provide practical learning opportunities for students.

“The deliberate steps and efforts of the University of Ilorin are commendable. Having conservation efforts on the ground will go a long way in amplifying our advocacy for nature conservation. Partnerships like this will boost our demonstration efforts, provide a training ground, and serve as a practical learning centre for university students on forest resources management,” Onoja stated.

The partnership aligns with the foundation’s long-standing engagement with educational institutions across Nigeria, where it has supported the development of conservation-focused curricula and extracurricular activities aimed at nurturing environmentally conscious citizens.

Officials noted that the introduction of conservation parks within tertiary institutions represents a relatively new strategy designed to provide practical, scalable solutions to environmental challenges while fostering sustainability awareness among young people.

The University of Ilorin, widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s leading higher institutions, continues to expand its role in community engagement and research-driven development.

Similarly, the Nigerian Conservation Foundation, established in 1980, remains at the forefront of environmental advocacy and sustainable development efforts, collaborating with local and international partners to protect biodiversity and promote responsible natural resource management.

The partnership is expected to not only enhance conservation efforts within the university but also serve as a model for similar collaborations across tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
