Alleged extortion: Delta CP orders disciplinary trial of officers

The Delta State Police Command has initiated disciplinary proceedings against two officers seen in a viral video allegedly collecting money from a member of the public within a police facility in Asaba.

The directive was issued by the Commissioner of Police, Yemi Oyeniyi, who ordered that the officers undergo a summary orderly trial following the circulation of the footage online.

The officers identified as Inspector Augustine Jeremiah (AP No. 262712) and Corporal Miracle Ehirim (F/No. 519970) were said to have been captured in a compromising situation inside the C Division Police Station.

According to reports, the video shows a man inside the station transferring N51,500 via a point-of-sale device while a uniformed officer stood close by.

The incident, which was secretly recorded and later shared on social media, sparked widespread public criticism.

Confirming the development in a post on X, the Police Public Relations Officer for Delta State, Bright Edafe, said the command had taken immediate action.

“The Delta State Commissioner of Police, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, has ordered the summary trial of AP No: 262712 Inspector Augustine Jeremiah and F/No 519970 Cpl Miracle Ehirim captured on the embarrassing video.

“Their orderly trial will be concluded today and the outcome will be made public. Say no to impunity,” Edafe said on Thursday.

The video, which lasts about three minutes, was reportedly shared by human rights activist Harrison Gwamnishu on Tuesday, who alleged that some police stations in the state allow POS operators to operate within their premises to facilitate illegal collections.

He also called on senior police authorities, including the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, and the Police Complaint Response Unit, to investigate the matter thoroughly.

The Complaint Response Unit later confirmed that the officers had been identified, arrested, and detained, adding that arrangements had been made for them to be transferred to Force Headquarters in Abuja for further interrogation, with a complaint tracking number CRU000073 assigned to the case.

The Delta Police Command had earlier condemned the incident, describing the conduct captured in the video as “embarrassing” and inconsistent with professional policing standards.
