The Ogun State Government has disclosed plans to file criminal charges against Abubakar Adamu, the driver of a stationary truck involved in the road accident that claimed the lives of associates of former world heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua.

At proceedings held on Thursday, Ogun State Senior Counsel, D.O. Ogunyomi, announced the development while taking over the prosecution in the case involving Adeniyi Kayode, the driver of the Lexus SUV conveying Joshua and his friends at the time of the crash.

Ogunyomi also urged the court to consolidate the charges against both Adamu and Kayode, citing their roles in the incident.

The court heard that the legal advice issued by the state’s Department of Public Prosecution (DPP) recommended that Kayode be prosecuted for reckless driving, alongside the truck driver.

Magistrate Olufunmilayo Somefun subsequently granted the request for the consolidation of charges and adjourned the matter until June 2, 2026, for further hearing.

The accident occurred on December 29, 2025, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway near the Sinoma area of Sagamu, Ogun State.

The SUV conveying Joshua and three others reportedly rammed into a stationary truck parked by the roadside while en route from Lagos.

Although Joshua survived with minor injuries, two of his close associates — Kevin Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami — lost their lives. Ghami was said to be Joshua’s long-time friend and strength and conditioning coach, while Ayodele served as his personal trainer.

Following the incident, the police arrested Kayode and charged him with a four-count offence bordering on dangerous driving causing death, as well as reckless and negligent driving. The case was later forwarded to the DPP for legal advice.

During an earlier sitting on March 17, counsel to the DPP, R.D. Kadiri, informed the court that new information had emerged and would be incorporated into the case, prompting a request for more time.

However, Kayode’s counsel, Abiodun Olalekan, opposed the move, alleging that the prosecution was employing delay tactics and prolonging proceedings unnecessarily.
