Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Monday, endorsed his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, as his preferred successor ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
The endorsement followed a closed-door meeting at Lagos House, Marina, where Hamzat formally declared his intention to contest the governorship before members of the State Executive Council and key party stakeholders.
The meeting was attended by members of the Governor’s Advisory Council, including Musiliu Obanikoro and Ganiyu Solomon, among others.
Speaking with journalists after the meeting, Sanwo-Olu described the decision as unanimous, noting that those present agreed Hamzat possesses the experience and capacity to lead the state.
“We just received the Deputy Governor, who came with a strong delegation of leaders in the state to formally inform us of his intention to contest the governorship,” the governor said.
“It was a unanimous position that the Deputy Governor is fit and well-prepared for the job. He understands the workings of the state and has the capacity to deliver,” he added.
Sanwo-Olu also expressed appreciation to Bola Ahmed Tinubu, whom he credited as instrumental to both his political emergence and his working relationship with Hamzat.
