Togo introduces visa-free entry for African passport holders

The government of Togo has announced a major revision of its immigration policy, granting visa-free entry to citizens of African countries who hold valid national passports.

Under the new arrangement, eligible travellers from across the continent will now be permitted to enter Togolese territory without a visa for visits not exceeding 30 days.

Authorities described the policy shift as part of broader efforts to deepen continental integration and promote freer movement across African borders.

In an official statement posted on its X page on Tuesday, the government said the reform reflects a strategic vision aimed at positioning the country as an accessible hub for regional cooperation and exchange.

It stated that, “Togo takes a historic step in strengthening African integration. Henceforth, all nationals of African states holding a valid national passport may enter Togolese territory without a visa, for a stay of up to 30 days.

“Through this major reform, the President of the Council reaffirms his commitment to making Togo a space of openness, mobility, opportunities, and cooperation at the heart of the African continent.”

Despite the relaxation of entry requirements, the authorities clarified that travellers will still be required to complete an online travel declaration via the government’s official platform at least 24 hours before arrival.

Upon completion, applicants will be issued a travel clearance document to facilitate entry.

Officials explained that the measure is designed to streamline border management while maintaining basic travel documentation procedures.

The Ministry also noted that the policy aligns with ongoing efforts to strengthen diplomatic and economic relations among African states, particularly in areas such as trade, tourism, and regional mobility.

With this development, Togo joins a growing number of African countries adopting more liberal entry policies for intra-African travel, a move widely seen as part of the push towards enhanced continental integration.
