Liverpool have announced the departure of head coach Arne Slot with immediate effect following a review of the club’s 2025/26 season, ending the Dutchman’s tenure at Anfield less than two years after he succeeded Jürgen Klopp.
The decision was disclosed on Saturday, with transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reporting that discussions between the club and Slot after the end-of-season assessment led to a mutual separation.
According to Romano, Liverpool have already identified Andoni Iraola as the leading candidate to take charge of the team. The Spaniard, who has impressed during his spell at AFC Bournemouth, is regarded as one of the most promising coaches in the Premier League.
Posting on X, Romano wrote, “Arne Slot and Liverpool to part ways with immediate effect. It’s over between the Dutch manager and Liverpool after end-of-the-season review. Andoni Iraola, clear favourite to take over as next Liverpool head coach.”
Slot arrived at Liverpool FC amid high expectations following Klopp’s departure and was tasked with continuing the club’s success. However, a disappointing campaign prompted a reassessment of the club’s direction despite the manager guiding the Reds to a Premier League title during his time in charge.
Confirming the development, Liverpool said in a statement, “Liverpool FC can confirm Arne Slot is to depart his role as head coach with immediate effect and that the process to appoint a successor is under way.
“He leaves with a Premier League title to his name and our deepest gratitude and appreciation.”
Attention has now shifted to Iraola, whose tactical approach and achievements with Bournemouth have earned widespread praise across English football.
Liverpool are expected to accelerate efforts to secure the Spaniard as they begin preparations for a new chapter under fresh leadership.
