The Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission (OGSIEC) has scheduled a bye-election for September 20, 2025, to fill the vacant seat in Ilaro Ward 1, Yewa South Local Government Area.

This decision was announced at a stakeholders’ meeting held at Oronna Hall, Ilaro, by the Commission’s Chairman, Babatunde Osibodu, represented by Chief (Mrs.) Remilekun Olaopa.

The bye-election is necessitated by the passing of Hon. Adekanbi Oluwaseun Olayinka, the incumbent Councillor.

Osibodu emphasised that the election aims to not only fill the vacant seat but also to deepen grassroots democracy.

He stressed the importance of collective responsibility in conducting a transparent, fair, and credible election.

The Commission has outlined a timetable and guidelines for the bye-election, which includes nomination of candidates, campaign periods, and election day.

Osibodu urged all stakeholders to conduct themselves peacefully and work towards a smooth process.

“This election is not just about filling a seat. It is about honouring his memory and giving the people of Ilaro Ward 1 the opportunity to choose a new representative who will serve with dedication, honesty, and commitment,” Osibodu stated.

Other stakeholders, including the Chairman of Yewa South Local Government, Barr. Babatunde Ogunsola, represented by his Vice, Hon. Sheriff Bankole, and representatives of various political parties, commended OGSIEC and pledged peaceful conduct during the election.

Representatives of political parties including ADC, APC, APGA, and PDP also commended OGSIEC for engaging stakeholders early and urged the Commission to ensure efficiency and proper coordination on election day.

Earlier in his welcome address, the Permanent Secretary of the Commission, Suraj Abdul, called for peaceful conduct and full participation of political parties, stressing that the Commission’s effort would only be meaningful if embraced by all stakeholders.
