Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah has once again called for the release of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Nnamdi Kanu, stating that freeing him is “the right thing to do.”

The governor made this assertion during a question-and-answer session at the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Annual General Conference in Enugu on Monday.

Mbah revealed that he had discussed Kanu’s release with President Bola Tinubu during his first visit, expressing his belief that Kanu’s freedom would be a positive step.

“My first visit to the President was about Nnamdi Kanu. I believe that the right thing to do is to release him. Hopefully, that will be done soon,” he said.

The governor also highlighted the progress made in Enugu State since he took office, noting that the Monday sit-at-home order observed in the Southeast region due to Kanu’s detention is no longer in effect in Enugu.

“We met a situation where people were compelled to stay at home every Monday. Now, people trade in Ogbete and other markets in peace on Mondays. Monday sit-at-home has ended in Enugu, as you (lawyers) can see,” he said.

Mbah’s advocacy for Kanu’s release comes as the IPOB leader faces trial at the Federal High Court in Abuja on terrorism charges, which he has denied.

In a separate presentation, Governor Mbah discussed his administration’s approach to transformational leadership, emphasizing the importance of vision, values, and disruptive strategies in achieving desired results. He highlighted the state’s progress in reducing crime and improving infrastructure, citing a significant reduction in violent crime and the implementation of over 2,000 projects across various sectors.
