The Lagos State Government has intensified its efforts to enforce the ban on Single Use Plastics (SUP) in the state, with a series of enforcement actions taken against non-compliant supermarkets.

According to a statement posted on X by Tokunbo Wahab, the state’s Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources on Wednesday, the Enforcement Team visited Blenco Supermarket in Lekki, Blend and Temple Hill Supermarkets in Ire-Akari, Jendol Supermarket in Jakande Estate, Ejigbo, and Lastprize and Reno supermarkets in Idimu, to ensure compliance with the state’s directive.

The Commissioner explained that the ban on SUP is part of the state’s wider efforts to mitigate the environmental risks and flooding associated with the use of these plastics. He assured that the government would continue to monitor, enforce, and work with businesses to adopt sustainable alternatives that safeguard the environment.

The Lagos State Government’s move is aimed at reducing the environmental impact of SUP and promoting a more sustainable future for the state. The government urges businesses and residents to comply with the directive and adopt eco-friendly alternatives to single-use plastics.

The Enforcement Team’s visit to the supermarkets was part of a broader effort to ensure compliance with the state’s environmental regulations. “The team will continue to monitor businesses and work with them to adopt sustainable practices,” Wahab said.

The use of single-use plastics has been identified as a major contributor to environmental pollution and flooding in Lagos.
