The Army has stepped up efforts to improve operational effectiveness and institutional performance through the introduction of a standardised evaluation framework.

This was disclosed in a statement issued on Wednesday by the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele.

According to the statement, the Army Headquarters Department of Standards and Evaluation held a sensitisation seminar on Tuesday at the Nigerian Army Conference Centre and Suites, Asokoro, Abuja, with senior officers and other stakeholders in attendance.

The seminar was organised to promote a clearer understanding of structured performance assessment systems across formations and units of the Army.

Declaring the event open, the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, who was represented by the Military Secretary, Major General Everest Okoro, described the initiative as a significant milestone in the institution’s development.

He said the programme was the first major engagement of the department since its creation and reflected the Army’s commitment to professionalism and excellence.

“The forum marks the department’s first major engagement since its establishment and underscores the commitment of the Nigerian Army to professional excellence,” the statement quoted him as saying.

The Army chief explained that the Department of Standards and Evaluation serves as the quality assurance unit of the service, with responsibility for monitoring compliance with approved benchmarks, assessing combat readiness and reviewing operational activities.

He noted that the framework would help identify strengths, address lapses and improve overall performance through a more effective assessment process.

Earlier in his welcome address, the Chief of Army Standards and Evaluation, Major General Bobby Ugiagbe, said the seminar was designed to encourage the consistent use of standards across the service.

He added that the initiative would deepen discipline, professionalism and operational efficiency among personnel.

“The seminar aims to promote the systematic application of standards in order to strengthen discipline, professionalism and operational effectiveness,” he said.

Ugiagbe further stated that the exercise would support the institutionalisation of uniform evaluation practices throughout the Nigerian Army, leading to better performance outcomes.

The statement added that the initiative reflects the Army’s determination to build a culture of accountability, precision and continuous improvement in line with global best practices.
