No fewer than four persons lost their lives, while 12 others sustained varying degrees of injuries in a lone commercial bus accident at Nunya, along the Abia axis of the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway.
The Federal Road Safety Corps confirmed the incident on Friday.
Abia State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Ngozi Ezeoma, told newsmen in Umuahia that the crash occurred at about 2:10 p.m. on Thursday and involved a white Nissan Caravan commercial bus.
She said preliminary findings indicated that the accident was caused by a burst tyre.
According to her, a total of 17 adult male passengers were involved in the crash.
“Four persons died, 12 sustained injuries, while one passenger escaped unhurt,” she said.
Ezeoma said officials of the command’s rescue team responded swiftly and evacuated the victims to the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia, for treatment.
She explained that two victims were confirmed dead on arrival at the hospital, while two others later died while receiving medical attention.
“The remains of the deceased have been deposited at the morgue,” she added.
The sector commander further stated that FRSC operatives cleared the obstruction caused by the accident to restore normal traffic flow along the highway.
