Nollywood and fans across Nigeria have been thrown into mourning following reports that actor Alexx Ekubo has allegedly died after battling a prolonged illness, with tributes pouring in from colleagues and admirers even as official confirmation from his family is still awaited.
According to reports shared by actress Mide Martins, the actor is said to have died while receiving treatment at a hospital in Lagos.
The development has left family members, colleagues, friends, and fans devastated, with tributes already pouring in from across social media platforms.
However, his family has not released an official statement at the time of filing this report, making the situation still developing and unverified.
Activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore paid an emotional tribute, describing Ekubo as a rare screen talent. He wrote:
“My profound condolences to the family, friends, and fans of Nollywood star Alexx Ekubo, who I understand passed away after a prolonged battle with cancer. He was a rare talent whose presence lit up the screen effortlessly. May he rest in power!”
Similarly, aide to the Delta State Governor, Ossai Ovie Success, confirmed the circulating reports and expressed sadness, stating:
“Actor, Alex Ekubo, d!es at 41 after battle with Cancer. Family sources say he passed away yesterday Monday, May 11, after a battle with Cancer. He was 41 years old.”
Tributes have continued to pour in from Nollywood colleagues.
Veteran actor Ali Nuhu simply wrote, “Adieu Alexx Ekubo 💔 RIP,” while actress Mercy Johnson Okojie expressed her grief, saying, “The most painful goodbyes are the ones that are never said and never explained…it is well.”
Filmmaker and actress Funke Akindele revealed she had tried to reach out to the actor before the news broke. In an emotional message.
She wrote, “I really tried to reach out to see you one more time but guess you knew best. May your kind soul rest in peace Alex. Ore mi, I will always remember and cherish the good times we shared together.”
Actor Bolanle Ninalowo also reacted from abroad, saying, “Rest on, Alex. May God heal your family and us all.”
Lawyer and activist Inibehe Effiong described Ekubo’s legacy as impactful, writing, “Rest well, Alexx Ekubo. Your contributions to the entertainment industry will not be forgotten in a hurry. Life is indeed ephemeral.”
Social media has also been flooded with emotional reactions from fans and colleagues. Netizen Precious Chiamaka Okoro wrote that the news was deeply painful, adding that she had recently prayed for his wellbeing after his brief public appearance earlier in the year.
Another netizens, Precious Ezeh, however, raised concerns over conflicting narratives surrounding the actor’s health, alleging that his condition may have been hidden from the public prior to the reported death.
As of press time, there has been no official confirmation from the family of Alexx Ekubo.
The actor had been noticeably absent from social media since December 2024, with a recent resurfaced video showing him appearing visibly slimmer, which had already sparked concern among fans about his health.
The situation remains fluid, and further official updates are expected from his family or management in the coming hours.
