Passport applications must go through official portal, NIS warns against fake platforms

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has cautioned the public against fraudulent third-party platforms and misleading online claims concerning its passport application and payment processes, insisting that its system remains secure, transparent and accessible only through its official channel.

In a statement issued via its official X handle on Monday, the Service described recent online allegations as false, misleading and capable of creating confusion among applicants both in Nigeria and in the diaspora.

It reaffirmed that all passport-related services are strictly conducted through its official portal, stressing that no alternative website or intermediary has been authorised to process applications or collect payments.

“The NIS operates a secure, transparent, and government-approved passport application system, which is accessible exclusively through its official portal,” the statement said.

The Service warned members of the public to disregard any other platforms claiming to offer passport services, describing them as fraudulent and unrecognised.

It further dismissed reports suggesting that a religious organisation or private entity is involved in its payment system, clarifying that it has no partnership with any such group or individual.

“At no time has the Service partnered with or authorised any religious organisation, private entity, or individual to act as an intermediary or receiving account on its behalf,” it stated.

Addressing the specific claims circulating online, the NIS said allegations linking a religious organisation to its payment process were entirely untrue and did not reflect its operational structure or procedures.

It added that it has begun investigations into the origin of the misinformation and warned that those found responsible would face appropriate sanctions.

“The Nigeria Immigration Service has taken note of this purported allegation and is currently investigating the matter. Appropriate action will be taken against any individuals or groups found culpable,” it added.

The Service urged the public to rely solely on its verified communication channels and avoid engaging with unofficial links, agents or intermediaries when applying for passports.
