2027: NDC woos Obi, Kwankwaso

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has stepped up moves to reposition itself ahead of the 2027 general elections, reaching out to former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, and former Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, with a proposal to run for president on its platform.

In a message posted on its official X account on Sunday, the party hinted at urgency, suggesting that both politicians have a short timeframe to decide on the offer.

“All we need right now. Just all we need. Two weeks to deadline,” the party stated, implying that the invitation is linked to its upcoming primary elections.

While the NDC did not elaborate on the specifics of the proposal, the outreach is seen as part of wider efforts among opposition groups to realign and strengthen their chances ahead of the next electoral cycle.

Smaller parties have increasingly sought to boost their relevance by attracting influential political figures.

Obi and Kwankwaso remain key players in opposition politics, having previously contested the presidency under different platforms and maintaining strong grassroots followings nationwide.

Their perceived ties to the African Democratic Congress have also sparked speculation about possible coalitions or mergers among opposition blocs aiming to challenge the ruling party.

As of the time of filing this report, neither Obi nor Kwankwaso has publicly reacted to the NDC’s overture, leaving uncertainty over the next political moves of both leaders.

With party primaries expected to shape early alignments, the coming weeks are likely to be decisive in determining whether leading opposition figures will remain within their current platforms or explore new alliances.
