Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has commended residents for their impressive participation in the reintroduced monthly Sanitation Day held on Saturday.
The governor’s commendation was contained in a statement issued on Sunday by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotosho.
According to the statement, the sanitation exercise recorded widespread compliance across the state, with residents in Ikorodu, Badagry, Lagos Island, Lagos Mainland, Alimosho, Ikeja, and Agege turning out in large numbers to clean their surroundings.
Sanwo-Olu praised the enthusiasm displayed by Lagosians, noting that many residents heeded the call by coming out early to contribute to environmental cleanliness.
“I thank Lagosians who joined the call to clean up our environment as a sure step to good health,” the governor was quoted as saying.
“That is patriotic; it is the Spirit of Lagos that we often speak about. We should continue to walk that path.”
The governor also cautioned against indiscriminate dumping of refuse, particularly as the rainy season approaches, stressing the need to keep drainage systems free to prevent flooding.
The statement further noted that the state government has commenced a large-scale clearing of gutters and drainage channels across Lagos in anticipation of heavy rainfall forecast for the year.
It added that the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, in collaboration with the Ministry of Information and Strategy, has launched an intensive public awareness campaign to discourage improper waste disposal and blockage of drainage systems.
Sanwo-Olu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to maintaining a clean and healthy environment, urging residents to sustain the culture of sanitation for the overall benefit of the state.
