Suspected bandits launched a deadly attack on National Park Service (NPS) personnel in Oloka, Oyo State’s Orire Local Government Area, on Tuesday night, leaving several officers dead.
The attack, which occurred around 9 p.m., has reportedly claimed the lives of at least four NPS personnel, with one person critically injured and receiving treatment.
Further details, including the exact number of casualties, are yet to be confirmed.
Eyewitness told Vanguard that the assailants infiltrated the area unnoticed and launched a brutal assault, leaving at least four officers dead and several others injured.
The eyewitness’ account described the incident as violent and well-coordinated, sparking panic among residents of nearby communities, many of whom now fear further attacks.
The Public Relations Officer of the Oyo State Police Command, DSP Olayinka Ayanlade, confirmed the incident on Wednesday.
He said, “Yes, there was an attack by yet to be identified men against the men of the National Park. The Commissioner of Police and other service chiefs are currently on their way to the location.”
He added that the Commissioner of Police, CP Femi Haruna, has ordered the immediate deployment of tactical teams, operatives of the Mobile Police Force and the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit to the area to forestall any further breakdown of law and order.
“Meanwhile, the CP Femi Haruna has deployed tactical teams, Mobile Police Force officers of the NPF and EOD to the affected area to prevent further breakdown of law and order,” he explained.
Security presence has since been reinforced in and around the affected community as investigations into the attack continue.
