The Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission (OGSIEC) has announced Saturday, June 6, 2026, as the date for a bye-election to fill the vacant councillorship seat in Iperu III Ward 5, Ikenne Local Government Area.

Chairman of the commission, Mr Babatunde Osibodu, disclosed this during a stakeholders’ meeting held at the Palace Hall of the Ebi of Idena Land in Iperu Remo.

Osibodu said the meeting was part of efforts to ensure a peaceful, transparent and credible electoral process, stressing the importance of engaging all stakeholders ahead of the poll.

He explained that the bye-election became necessary following the death of the former councillor, Hon. Nurudeen Bakare, describing the occasion as a moment to reflect on the late lawmaker’s service and contributions to the community.

According to him, the election provides residents and stakeholders the opportunity to choose a capable successor who will represent the ward with integrity and commitment.

Speaking at the meeting, the Olumogun Adimula of Idena Remo, Oba Luqman Adebambo Salami, commended OGSIEC for organising the forum, saying the initiative would promote inclusiveness and strengthen public confidence in the electoral process.

The monarch noted that the practice of imposing candidates on communities was gradually ending, adding that the current process reflects democratic ideals.

Chairman of Ikenne Local Government, Hon. Jamiu Ashimi, also praised the commission for convening the meeting during what he described as a sensitive period for the ward.

Ashimi said the death of the councillor created a leadership vacuum, adding that the engagement was timely and reassuring to residents.

He pledged the support of the local government towards the successful conduct of the bye-election.

Highlights of the meeting included the presentation of the election timetable and guidelines by the Resident Electoral Officer, as well as an interactive session with stakeholders.

The event was attended by community leaders, traditional rulers, representatives of political parties and residents of Iperu III Ward 5.
