Plateau killings: Portable blasts Christian leaders over silence

Controversial Nigerian singer Habeeb Okikiola Badmus, popularly known as Portable, has stirred fresh debate over the role of religious leaders in responding to insecurity, particularly following recent killings in Plateau State.

In a viral video circulating on social media, the artiste criticised Christian leaders for what he described as their muted response to violent attacks affecting their congregations.

His comments come in the wake of renewed outrage over a deadly incident that reportedly occurred during Palm Sunday celebrations in Plateau State.

Portable questioned why prominent pastors have not taken a more visible stance, including organising protests or publicly confronting authorities over the killings.

“Why are pastors not speaking out or leading action when their members are being attacked?” he asked in a mix of Yoruba and Pidgin.

The singer also drew comparisons with other religious groups, suggesting that similar attacks on them would provoke stronger reactions from their leaders and followers.

“If it were another group, there would be a louder response. But when it comes to Christians, many leaders remain quiet,” he said.

His remarks have since triggered mixed reactions online, with some Nigerians backing his call for greater advocacy from religious institutions, while others criticised his approach and tone.

The Federal Government has previously dismissed claims of targeted religious killings, maintaining that acts of violence across the country are largely driven by criminality and insurgency rather than religious persecution.

Portable’s comments add to growing public pressure on religious and community leaders to play a more active role in addressing Nigeria’s security challenges and advocating for affected populations.
