Insecurity has sown seeds of fear, Archbishop Martins calls for action

The Catholic Archbishop of Lagos, Alfred Adewale Martins, has urged Nigerians to remain steadfast in faith despite mounting economic and security challenges, while strongly condemning the persistent killings across the country.

In his 2026 Easter message issued on Saturday and signed by Very Rev. Fr. Anthony Godonu, the Archbishop described the resurrection of Jesus Christ as a symbol of hope capable of strengthening citizens amid hardship.

He said, “It is my prayer that the profound significance of this period will permeate our hearts, renew our spirits, and fortify us for the journey ahead. Let the joy of the empty tomb fill our homes and communities, reminding us that even in the darkest of circumstances, the light of Christ prevails.”

The cleric noted that this year’s Easter celebration comes at a time when many Nigerians are burdened by economic hardship and widespread insecurity. According to him, the prevailing situation has left many families struggling and living in fear.

“We are acutely aware of the harsh economic realities that have become the daily burden of countless Nigerian families. The persistent threats to our security have sown seeds of fear and anxiety,” he said, adding that the message of Easter offers reassurance even in difficult times.

Archbishop Martins emphasised that the resurrection represents victory over suffering and uncertainty, urging citizens not to allow current challenges to weaken their faith.

“The resurrection is the ultimate testament that God is sovereign over every force of darkness. I urge you to place all your trust in God,” he stated.

The Archbishop, however, expressed deep concern over the recent attack in Jos, Plateau State, where more than 27 people were reportedly killed on Palm Sunday in Angwan Rukuba. He described the incident as tragic and disturbing.

“It is very disheartening that the perpetrators of this dastardly act chose to do so on a day that is sacred to followers of Christ,” he said.

He also criticised the government’s handling of insecurity, accusing authorities of failing to adequately protect lives and property.

“It is also unfortunate that the government has consistently abdicated its responsibility and has failed woefully to put an end to the lingering cases of insecurity,” the statement read.

While condemning the continued killings nationwide, the Archbishop called on all levels of government to prioritise the safety and welfare of citizens above political considerations.

“There is no justification for these unwarranted attacks. The policies formulated and the actions taken by those in power should place the welfare, security, and dignity of every Nigerian above partisan interests,” he said.

He further criticised the rising cost of petroleum products, noting that the increase has worsened the economic burden on citizens despite Nigeria’s status as an oil-producing nation.

The Archbishop urged leaders to emulate the sacrificial leadership of Christ and take decisive steps to address insecurity and economic hardship. He warned that failure to do so should prompt responsible officials to step aside for more competent hands.

“They must rise to the occasion. Failure to do these, it will only be proper for those responsible to resign and allow for more competent hands to take over,” he added.

Looking ahead to future elections, Archbishop Martins encouraged Nigerians to take an active role in the democratic process by choosing leaders of integrity and accountability.

He also called for unity, urging citizens not to allow ethnic or religious differences to deepen divisions but instead promote peace and reconciliation.

The Archbishop concluded with prayers for victims of insecurity across states including Sokoto, Maiduguri and Plateau, asking God to grant comfort to grieving families and peace to the nation.
