The Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Abeokuta, Most Rev. Peter Odetoyinbo, has called on Nigerians not to lose hope despite the country’s socio-economic and security challenges.

In his 2026 Easter message issued on Saturday, the cleric declared that the message of Easter offers assurance of a better future.

He described Easter as the celebration of “new life and bright future,” emphasizing that the resurrection of Jesus Christ remains the cornerstone of Christian faith and a symbol of victory over suffering and despair.

Addressing the faithful, Odetoyinbo said, “Easter is the foundation of our Christian faith and hope. It is the solemn proclamation that darkness does not endure forever, and suffering is not meaningless in the hands of God since death itself has been conquered through the resurrection of Christ.”

The bishop linked the significance of Easter to Nigeria’s current realities, noting that many citizens are grappling with poverty, hunger, insecurity and unemployment. He acknowledged the daily struggles faced by families, including rising living costs and limited access to basic needs.

He also referenced recent violence in Plateau State, stating, “The Jos Mayhem is still being felt. May God heal the wounded, comfort the families and grant eternal rest to the dead.”

Reassuring Nigerians, the bishop stressed that God remains present even in difficult times. According to him, “The resurrection assures us that God never abandons His people in the darkest hour. This is the message Easter gives to our nation today: God is still working, even when hope appears delayed.”

Odetoyinbo urged citizens not to give in to despair, expressing confidence that the nation can overcome its present challenges. He called for collective faith, patience and trust in divine intervention, adding that restoration is still possible.

The bishop gave special encouragement to young people, advising them to remain focused and hopeful despite economic uncertainties. He also commended parents for their sacrifices and offered prayers for victims of insecurity, displacement and violence across the country.

He further called on Nigerians to embody the values of compassion, honesty, and mutual support, noting that national progress depends not only on government policies but also on the moral strength of citizens.

To those in leadership positions, Odetoyinbo emphasised the need for accountability and justice, reminding them that authority is a sacred responsibility that must uphold human dignity and fundamental rights.

“Leadership must serve truth, justice, dignity of human life and protect all fundamental human rights,” he stated.

The cleric concluded by urging continuous prayers for Nigeria, asking God to grant peace, justice and protection to all citizens. He also prayed for healing, comfort and provision for families across the country, expressing hope that brighter days lie ahead.
