Delta NMA disowns viral cancer report linked to Blessing CEO

The Delta State chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has dismissed as false a medical report circulating online and linked to social media personality Blessing Okoro, popularly known as Blessing CEO.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the association clarified that the histology result being shared did not belong to Okoro but was originally issued to a different patient diagnosed with breast cancer.

The document, according to the NMA, had been altered before resurfacing online.

The statement, jointly signed by the state chairman, Israel Adaigho, and secretary, Usamah Hannah, explained that the authentic report was produced on May 9, 2025, by a diagnostic centre in Asaba following a referral from a private hospital.

The test result was delivered to the attending physician and was meant for a patient identified as Mbara Deborah—not Okoro.

The association further stressed that the medical facility responsible for the test never issued any report in Okoro’s name.

It noted that the laboratory’s proprietor, a consultant pathologist, had reached out to clarify the situation after the document gained widespread attention online.

According to the NMA, the original version of the report—bearing the correct patient’s identity—had already been made public through legal representatives, reaffirming its authenticity.

In contrast, the version attributed to Okoro was described as manipulated.

The body said it was compelled to respond due to how the altered document was being used in the public space, urging Nigerians to exercise caution and not be misled.

It also called on relevant authorities to investigate the matter and prevent exploitation of unsuspecting individuals.

The controversy stems from Okoro’s earlier claim that she had been diagnosed with advanced-stage breast cancer.

In late March, she shared an emotional video announcing the illness and appealed for financial assistance, reportedly receiving millions of naira in donations.

However, doubts soon emerged after another individual alleged that the medical report being circulated had been taken and modified.

Public scrutiny intensified following Okoro’s inability to provide clear details about her diagnosis during a live social media session with media personality Daddy Freeze.

In a subsequent interview with content creator Egungun of Lagos, Okoro walked back her earlier claim of having stage four cancer, suggesting there may have been a misunderstanding in communication from her doctors.

She also denied reports of receiving N100 million in donations, maintaining that the amount was significantly lower and that her diagnosis had yet to be conclusively determined.

The situation has continued to generate reactions online, with some public figures demanding accountability and, in certain cases, legal action.
