Supreme Court nullifies PDP Ibadan convention, sacks Turaki-led national exco

The Supreme Court of Nigeria on Thursday invalidated the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) national convention held in Ibadan in November 2025, effectively nullifying the emergence of the factional national executive led by former Minister, Tanimu Turaki (SAN).

In a judgment delivered in Abuja, the apex court declared the convention unconstitutional and of no legal effect, thereby voiding all decisions, resolutions, and outcomes arising from the exercise.

The convention, which held between 15 and 16 November 2025 in Ibadan, Oyo State, had produced a parallel leadership structure within the opposition party, deepening existing divisions over control of the PDP’s national leadership.

By the ruling, the Turaki-led executive and all offices created at the convention have been set aside, further complicating the party’s long-running internal crisis.

Although the full details of the judgment were yet to be made public at the time of filing this report, the decision is expected to significantly alter the balance of power within the PDP and reshape its internal political structure.

The party has been embroiled in sustained leadership disputes in recent months, with rival factions laying claim to the legitimacy of the national executive, a situation that has repeatedly triggered legal battles and political tensions.

Political analysts say the Supreme Court ruling may force a reset of ongoing reconciliation efforts within the party, especially as stakeholders seek to reposition the PDP ahead of future elections.

Efforts to obtain immediate reactions from leaders within the Turaki-led faction were unsuccessful, as party officials were said to be reviewing the implications of the judgment.

Further developments are expected as the PDP is anticipated to issue a formal response and possibly take steps to comply with the apex court’s decision.
