A 15-hour gun battle between police operatives and suspected secessionists in Awa, Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State, has resulted in the deaths of four suspected members of the group.
The police operation, which was carried out in collaboration with local vigilantes, also led to the rescue of a victim who had been kidnapped and held hostage in the secessionist camp.
According to the Anambra State Police Command spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga, in a statement on Friday, the operation was launched based on credible intelligence, and the police operatives successfully dislodged the insurgents’ camp.
A significant cache of arms and ammunition was recovered, including pump-action guns, fabricated rifles, and Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs).
The recovered items also included vehicles, mobile phones, and other materials suspected to have been used by the group for their nefarious activities.
The police command said the operation was part of its sustained effort to rid Anambra State of criminal elements.
The Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, assured the public that the command remains committed to ensuring safety and security in the state.
He also assured that extensive operations are ongoing to track down and arrest other fleeing suspects and destroy other criminal camps in the state.
