Human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong has announced that the Court of Appeal sitting in Calabar has fixed September 28, 2026, for the hearing of his appeal challenging his one-month imprisonment and committal for alleged contempt of court.

Effiong disclosed this in a social media post on Tuesday, stating that a cross-section of his legal team represented him during proceedings.

He explained that he was unable to attend the sitting because of other pressing court matters in different parts of the country.

According to him, the legal team at Tuesday’s proceedings was led by Mba Ukweni, with other lawyers including Ime Umanah, James Ibor, Augustine Asuquo and First Baba Isa in attendance.

He added that his broader legal team is headed by Femi Falana, alongside several Senior Advocates of Nigeria and other counsel.

Effiong said the three-member panel of justices removed all obstacles to the hearing of the appeal and directed the Akwa Ibom State Government, represented by former Attorney General Ekpenyong Ntekim, to file its Brief of Argument within 14 days.

He noted that the matter, which arose from events of July 27, 2022, would now be subjected to appellate review after four years, expressing appreciation to the justices and his legal team for the progress recorded.
