Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has accused Nigeria’s political elite of hijacking public housing projects and using stolen funds to build luxury mansions.
In a post shared on X on Thursday, Sowore alleged that land and houses originally meant for ordinary Nigerians had been taken over by corrupt officials who diverted public resources for personal gain.
“For too long, corrupt elites have hijacked land and houses meant for the people, using stolen public funds to build mansions they don’t even live in,” he wrote.
The activist said such practices would end under his proposed administration, promising a return to mass public housing across the country.
According to him, his housing policy would focus on mixed-income estates rather than segregated “low-income housing,” with facilities such as schools, clinics, malls, theatres, playgrounds and transport infrastructure integrated into the communities.
Sowore also pledged to build one million affordable and environmentally responsible public homes for workers, students, families and communities nationwide.
He described the proposal as part of a “new era of public housing” under his #Sowore2027 campaign.
