Former presidential aspirant and banker Mohammed Hayatu-Deen has formally declared his intention to contest the presidential primary of the African Democratic Congress, saying Nigeria urgently needs experienced and honest leadership to confront worsening economic hardship and insecurity.
Hayatu-Deen made the announcement in a statement issued on Thursday, revealing that he had submitted his nomination forms for the party’s presidential contest.
According to him, the decision to seek the party’s ticket was made after careful reflection on the country’s current challenges, which he said have left many Nigerians struggling to survive.
He lamented the rising cost of living, noting that food prices have more than doubled, while fuel costs have risen sharply compared to three years ago.
The former banker also expressed concern over persistent insecurity, stating that many communities across the country continue to live under the threat of kidnapping and banditry.
He further decried the growing frustration among young Nigerians, saying many youths are without jobs, hope, or reasons to remain in the country.
“Nigeria is at a crossroads,” he said. “Food prices have more than doubled. Fuel costs are nearly five times what it did three years ago. Communities across the country live under the shadow of kidnapping and banditry.”
Hayatu-Deen said his four decades of experience in building institutions and reviving struggling organisations had prepared him for the task of national leadership.
“I have spent forty years building institutions in this country. I have created jobs. I have turned around failing organisations. I have seen what Nigeria is capable of when it is led properly,” he stated.
On security, the presidential hopeful unveiled a tough stance against criminality, promising to prosecute bandits, kidnappers and their collaborators under terrorism laws if elected.
He also vowed to end what he described as silence surrounding ransom payments, insisting that government must reclaim its duty of protecting citizens.
“Every bandit, every kidnapper, every collaborator will be prosecuted under terrorism law. The state exists to protect its citizens, and under my leadership, it will,” he said.
Hayatu-Deen described the ADC as a party positioned to offer Nigerians a fresh alternative, saying it is free from the baggage of past governance failures.
He said he was seeking the party’s ticket not for personal ambition, but because Nigeria requires capable leadership at a critical time.
“The ADC was built for this moment. A party unencumbered by the failures of the past. A party that can offer Nigeria a new direction,” he added.
He expressed confidence in both his readiness and the nation’s desire for change, calling on Nigerians to join him in building a safer and more prosperous future.
