Lagos Continental Hotel has reaffirmed its reputation as a pioneer in people-first hospitality with the unveiling of the Lagos Continental Training Academy, a facility dedicated to upskilling employees and setting new benchmarks for service quality in Nigeria.

At the inauguration, the General Manager, Lagos Continental Hotel, Christoph Schleissing, described the academy as a strategic investment in both people and performance.

“We are creating a future where teams come together not only to learn, but to think, create, collaborate, and inspire. When people feel valued, challenged, and inspired, excellence stops being an expectation. It becomes a way of life,” he said.

The academy’s curriculum is built around five core pillars: training, facilitation, coaching, leadership, and innovation.

According to Schleissing, this structure ensures that participants develop not only technical competence, but also the leadership mindset required to thrive in a fast-evolving industry.

Leading the programmes are Williams Umeh, Assistant Training Manager; Emmanuel King, Training Coordinator; and Williams Shaibu, Training Executive. All three are associates of the Nigerian Institute of Training and Development and will be responsible for delivering structured, high-impact learning initiatives aligned with global best practices.

Schleissing emphasized that the academy is more than a training venue. “This is not simply a training centre. It is a learning experience designed to transform individuals and strengthen teams from the inside out,” he said.

The facility will provide staff members with opportunities to refine their skills, gain new competencies, and prepare for leadership roles within the hotel and across the Continental Group. By doing so, Lagos Continental Hotel aims to create a pipeline of talent that can sustain its service standards for years to come.

Culture change is a central focus of the initiative. Schleissing noted that the academy would embed values of knowledge, professionalism, integrity, and curiosity into the daily operations of the hotel. This cultural shift, he noted, would differentiate Lagos Continental Hotel in a competitive market.

The inauguration also underscores the hotel’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s wider hospitality ecosystem. By raising internal standards and sharing expertise, the academy is expected to contribute to the overall growth of the sector and inspire other operators to prioritise staff development.

For Schleissing, the initiative reflects the hotel’s long-standing belief that service excellence begins with empowered employees. “Our vision is to be a centre of excellence in hospitality learning and leadership development,” he said.

With the academy now operational, Lagos Continental Hotel is consolidating its position as a leader in service innovation, talent development, and operational excellence.

Industry observers say the move sets a new standard for peer hotels in Lagos and across Nigeria, showing how strategic investment in people can translate directly into superior guest experience and brand loyalty.

The Lagos Continental Training Academy officially opens its doors with the message: ‘Welcome to the beginning of something extraordinary’.
