NNPP decries hardship facing workers, urges political action

The New Nigeria People’s Party (New Nigeria People’s Party) has expressed concern over the worsening economic conditions confronting Nigerian workers, warning that inflation, rising transport costs, and escalating prices of food and essential services are making survival increasingly difficult.

In its Workers’ Day message marking the 2026 celebration of Workers’ Day, the party said Nigerian workers continue to bear the burden of economic instability while struggling to keep the country’s economy running.

The NNPP National Chairman, Bala Yunusa Mohammed, in a statement signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ladipo Johnson, extended solidarity to workers across the country, describing them as the backbone of national productivity.

The party noted that despite “daunting economic headwinds and the rising cost of living,” Nigerian workers have continued to demonstrate resilience and commitment to national development.

“Your dedication to keeping the wheels of this country turning is nothing short of heroic,” the statement read.

While commending workers for their endurance, the NNPP stressed that resilience should not become a substitute for improved living conditions, insisting that workers deserve a country that prioritises their welfare.

It argued that governance should focus on reducing the cost of living and strengthening social support systems to ease hardship on citizens.

“As we move further into this critical electoral cycle, the NNPP urges every worker to recognise their collective power,” the party stated.

The party also called on Nigerian workers—from civil servants in urban centres to labourers in rural communities—to become more politically engaged in order to influence governance outcomes.

It urged them to support leaders who are committed to policies that reduce economic pressure and improve living standards.

“To transform the standard of living in Nigeria, workers must move beyond mere survival and embrace political organisation,” the statement added, calling for investments in infrastructure and social safety nets.

Reaffirming its political stance, the NNPP said it remains committed to advocating for improved welfare and dignity for workers, insisting that national development must reflect the wellbeing of the labour force.

“The strength of a nation lies in the hands of its workers,” the party said, adding that the 2026 elections present an opportunity for workers to elect leaders “sensitive to their plight and dedicated to raising the standard of living for every Nigerian family.”
