The management of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has approved a three-week mid-semester break for students following recent protests on campus.

The decision was taken on Tuesday by the University Senate after a review of recent developments linked to student agitation over the newly introduced transportation system.

A statement issued by the institution’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, said the break takes immediate effect and is aimed at restoring order and ensuring the safety of students, staff, and other members of the university community.

According to the statement, the protests, which initially began as opposition to the transport arrangement, escalated into disruptive activities, including the blockage of major access roads and alleged harassment of road users.

The university noted that despite several interventions and appeals for calm, tensions continued to rise, raising concerns over safety and the need to prevent further breakdown of order on campus.

Consequently, the Senate directed that all students proceed on an immediate three-week mid-semester break and vacate their halls of residence without delay.

The management added that during the break, engagements will continue with relevant stakeholders to address the issues raised by students and work towards restoring normal academic activities.

Parents and guardians have been advised to take note of the development and make necessary arrangements for their wards.

The university also urged students to remain law-abiding during the break, stressing its commitment to their welfare and the maintenance of a stable academic environment.

Further updates are expected to be communicated by the institution in due course.
