Obi my principal, not godfather, says Aisha Yesufu

Human rights activist, Aisha Yesufu, has clarified her relationship with former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, stating that he is not her godfather but someone she regards as her principal.

Yesufu made the clarification during an interview on Arise Television on Monday, where she also addressed her political affiliations and future ambitions.

She explained that she was never a member of the Labour Party, noting that her support for Obi during the 2023 election was driven by her belief in his empathy, patriotism, and commitment to national development.

According to her, she initially belonged to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) before later moving to the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC).

The activist further disclosed her intention to transition fully into partisan politics, stressing that her focus, if elected into the Senate to represent the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), would be strong oversight of the executive arm of government.

She stated that she would oppose what she described as unnecessary or frivolous loan requests, regardless of who is in power.

In her words, “I don’t have a godfather. Peter Obi is not my godfather. He is my principal.

“First of all, I was never in the Labour Party, and I’ve said this repeatedly. I was a supporter of Mr Peter Obi.

“I was a member of the African Democratic Congress, and from there I moved to the Nigerian Democratic Congress.

“I gave my word to Peter Obi, and I see him as someone who has empathy, who is patriotic, and who genuinely cares about Nigeria working for Nigerians.

“I want someone who gets into office and I don’t need to keep making demands.

“I’m taking advocacy and activism into politics because, as a lawmaker, my primary responsibility will be to hold the executive accountable.

“You can’t come as President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and bring frivolous loan requests to the Senate, and I, Aisha Yesufu, representing FCT, will just accept that.”
