The Nigerian Army has reportedly dismantled a stronghold belonging to the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), in Imo State, while recovering suspected remains of two soldiers killed in 2022.
According to an operational report made available to the News Agency of Nigeria on Saturday in Abuja, the operation was carried out by troops of the 82 Division in collaboration with other security agencies.
It took place on Friday along the Ubaha-Orsu axis in Orsu Local Government Area of the state.
The report indicated that the mission formed part of ongoing clearance and search operations aimed at flushing out IPOB/ESN elements and locating the remains of Master Warrant Officer Linus Musa Audu and Private Gloria Mathew.
“The two personnel were abducted and killed in May 2022 while travelling for their traditional wedding,” the report stated.
It further revealed that troops encountered heavy resistance as they advanced on the suspected hideout, coming under attack from armed fighters.
However, the soldiers reportedly overpowered the assailants with superior firepower, repelling multiple ambushes and forcing them to retreat.
Following the successful clearance of the camp, troops conducted a thorough search of the area and discovered shallow graves believed to contain the remains of the slain personnel.
“The remains were subsequently exhumed and secured for forensic examination, including DNA analysis, to confirm their identities,” the report said.
It added that efforts were ongoing to liaise with the families of the deceased to ensure proper identification and facilitate dignified burial arrangements.
The army noted that the operation underscores its commitment to securing justice for fallen personnel and dismantling criminal networks in the South-east.
“The discovery further exposes the atrocities of IPOB/ESN elements and their disregard for human life,” the report added.
Reaffirming its resolve, the army assured the public that operations would continue until all criminal elements are neutralised and lasting peace is restored in the region.
It also urged residents to remain vigilant and provide timely and credible information to security agencies.
