The Delta State Police Command has announced the establishment of a specialised Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) as part of a broader restructuring aimed at improving operational efficiency, discipline, and accountability.

The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Saturday by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, in Asaba.

According to the statement, the initiative follows a directive from the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, to strengthen policing standards nationwide.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Yemi Oyeniyi, said the VCRU would serve as a rapid response unit for violent and high-risk incidents requiring urgent intervention.

“The VCRU is designed to handle violent and high-risk complaints requiring urgent police intervention. The Unit will function as a rapid response and coordination platform, working in synergy with Divisions and Tactical teams to ensure prompt and professional handling of such incidents,” the statement read.

As part of its take-off, selected personnel were subjected to a three-day intensive retraining programme, during which they received lectures on legal frameworks, use of force, and compliance with existing laws.

Officers were also retrained in arms handling, musketry, and the responsible use of firearms, with emphasis on professionalism and operational safety.

The Commissioner of Police, who addressed the officers during the training, charged them to uphold discipline and respect for human rights, warning that negligence or misconduct would not be tolerated.

The Command noted that the reform is aimed at deepening professional policing, restoring public confidence, and ensuring swift responses to violent crimes across the state.

Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers have been directed to support the new unit and ensure that all cases referred to it are handled promptly and in line with established procedures.

The police leadership also reassured residents of its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, urging the public to report incidents through official channels while pledging to deliver more responsive and people-centred policing across Delta State.
