Nigerian workers mark International Workers’ Day without joy – Sowore

Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has described this year’s International Workers’ Day as an “Unhappy Workers’ Day” for millions of Nigerian workers, citing poor wages and deepening economic hardship.

In a statement posted on X on Friday to mark the annual celebration, Sowore said the day should serve as a reminder of both the dignity of labour and the persistent injustice confronting workers across the country.

According to him, Nigerian workers, who contribute immensely to national development through their hard work and sacrifice, continue to receive meagre wages that do not reflect their efforts or current economic realities.

He criticised the disparity between the treatment of workers and the benefits enjoyed by political office holders, alleging that many public officials continue to approve excessive salaries, allowances and pensions for themselves despite what he described as a lack of corresponding productivity.

Sowore argued that the situation highlights the widening inequality in the country and the failure of leadership to prioritise the welfare of ordinary citizens.

The activist has consistently called for reforms in workers’ welfare, better remuneration, and accountability in public service. His latest remarks come amid growing concerns over inflation, rising living costs, and the struggle of many Nigerian workers to meet basic needs despite recent wage adjustments.
